The Big Beaver Creek Watershed is located in the Southwest portion of the county. This is a 21 square mile watershed. Today there are about 34 miles of streams within the Big Beaver Creek Watershed. The mainstem of the Big Beaver Creek flows mostly northwest to the stream’s confluence with the Pequea Creek around Refton. According to the USGS Stream Stats website only about 23% of the watershed is forested and about 3% of the watershed has urban development on it. The watershed starts in the Borough of Quarryville and heads north through New Providence and Refton. Presently there is not an active watershed association working within the Big Beaver but there was a small group in the past doing some conservation work within the watershed. This organization mostly dealt with education and outreach and stream restoration work in the watershed. There have not been a lot of studies completed in this watershed to date but the Big Beaver Creek is listed in the Pequea Creek Watershed Implementation Plan and possible improvement projects within the Big Beaver are listed in this plan.
